About country

A teardrop-shaped island cast adrift in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is filled with cultural and natural treasures. Indians, Portuguese, Dutch and British have all left their marks here, making for a delightful mix of ancient cities, monuments and atmospheric colonial architecture.
At the same time, palm-fringed beaches are never far away and mountainous greenery beckons inland. It's clear to see why Marco Polo proclaimed Sri Lanka to be one of the best islands in the world.
Whether it’s a trail elephant crossing the highway, a literary festival in Galle, leopard sighting in Yala National Park, tasting an exceptional cup of tea at a plantation, stumbling upon vast ancient ruins in the middle of the jungle or discovering a deserted beach, Sri Lanka is a series of unexpected delights.
Sri Lanka has known its fair share of political turmoil and natural disasters in recent decades; however the country is finally finding political stability once again - marked by the Foreign Commonwealth Office removing travel restrictions across the entire country in mid 2010.
From its lush mountainous regions, to its perfect beaches, from its incomparable wildlife population to its peerless historical monuments, Sri Lanka is again becoming a holidaymakers’ favourite destination.

Sightseeing

Spy on Sri Lanka's abundant wildlife (much of which is found nowhere else on earth) in the country's various sanctuaries and national parks. Birdwatching is superb, and as well as the famous elephants there are also leopards, deer, bears, wild boar, porcupines and monkeys to see.
Sri Lanka’s highest mountain is deeply ingrained in Sri Lankan folk lore. Also known as Sri Pada (Sacred Footprint) because of an indentation at the summit, Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Christians all consider it a holy place and a popular pilgrammage site, with 4,800 steps to the top.
Wonder at the extraordinary civilization that ruled from the ancient capital of Anuradhapura thousands of years ago. Its majestic remains testify to an advanced city carefully planned and filled with beautiful palaces, temples and giant stupas.

Cuisine

Sri Lankan cuisine is one of the complex cuisines of South Asia. Due to its proximity to South India the cuisine of Sri Lanka shows some influence, yet is in many ways quite distinct. As a major trade hub, it draws influence from colonial powers that were involved in Sri Lanka and by foreign traders. Rice, which is consumed daily, can be found at any occasion, while spicy curries are favorite dishes for dinner and lunch.
